Carlos Tevez's Manchester United future in the air

Serbia international midfielder Tosic, 21, will join United's first-team squad immediately after securing a work permit last month, while forward Ljajic, 17, will remain with Partizan until the end of this season before linking up with United in the summer.

Negotiations with Tevez's representatives over a permanent £32 million transfer are making slow progress and the United manager admits that no agreement has yet been reached to turn the Argentina forward's two-year loan deal into a full-time contract.

He said: "I'm not going on about that because it's never-ending. I'm sure [chief executive] David Gill is doing his best, but I've nothing to report.

"We've been trying, but it's difficult sometimes with agents nowadays. All of the players and managers trying to do deals this January will experience that."

Ferguson, who admitted that club captain Gary Neville was likely to get a new contract when his deal expired in the summer, believes left-winger Tosic is capable of making an impact at United this season.

He said: "He plays on the wide left and we like wide players at this club. We've been watching him for about a year and he's now a regular in the Serbia national team. Once he gets used to the pace of our game, I think he could play a part.

"But that's the end of our transfer business for this season. There will definitely be nothing else."

Tosic told Serbian state television that he was “delighted” after securing a move to the Premier League, European and world champions.

“I could not imagine a better New Year’s present and I am at a loss for words to describe how delighted I am,” said Tosic, who won the league and cup double with Partizan last season.

“I have to keep working hard, prove that I am good enough for United and earn my place in the club.”

Ljajic, who had a 10-day trial with United in October, said he was content to remain with Partizan for the time being.

“I am happy to spend another year with Partizan because the club has done so much for me and I hope to win some silverware this season in return,” Ljajic said.(telegraph)
